Jeremy Ashton

will graduate with BA in English, St. John’s University 2017 (Minor in Social Justice)

Jeremy is about to enter his MA year of the 5-year BA/MA in English combined degree program at St. John’s University. As an independent study and capstone project for the Ozanam Scholar’s Program, he also cofounded and created the curriculum for Divergent NYC, an afterschool program for empowering teenaged survivors of Domestic Violence. Developed for Safe Horizon, Divergent NYC included aspects of his other passions, creative writing and poetry. He has also lead English workshops to members of Shuar communities in Ecuador, intellectually disabled adults in Rome, and at Casa Internazionale Della Donne, a woman’s empowerment center in Italy. His poetry has appeared in WildSpice Magazine, The Good Men Project and Sequoya, St. John’s literary and arts magazine.

He hopes to apply the skills and perspective he’s gained through his time in the English Department to a future career as a public interest lawyer, and as a lifelong learner and advocate for social justice.
