Congrats to Dr. Grant Crawford, who passed is Doctoral Dissertation Defense yesterday after a wide-ranging, thoughtful, and perceptive conversation. He is pictured here with his thumbs up, with his mentor, Dr. Anne Geller, and committee members Dr. Dohra Ahmad and Dr. Steve Mentz.
Dr. Crawford’s dissertation, “Sonic Futures: Exploring Podcasting, Artificial Intelligence, and the Evolving Landscape of Composition,” brings together detailed analysis of pedagogical practices, student performance, and competing theories of composition studies. Written during the surge of Large Language Models after the introduction of Chat-GPT in fall 2022, Dr. Crawford’s work provides a thoughtful and persuasive antidote to both AI hype and to doomer anxieties.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Crawford on his achievement. We are excited to send him into the world with a PhD in English from St. John’s.
