
The Queens College English Department invites applications for a full-time lecturer who will also be Associate Director of the College’s First Year Initiative program, to begin in Fall 2016-2017. Lecturers have the opportunity to earn a Certificate of Continuous Employment after five years, which is the equivalent of tenure at CUNY.
Working with the Director, the Associate Director will administer and teach in the Freshman Year Initiative, Queens College’s award-winning program focused on first-year writing and general education. Freshman at Queens College are members of an FYI Community, which consists of a course in general education paired with a section of freshman writing. The course structure is supported by relevant mentoring and event programming. The academic home of the Associate Director will be the Queens College English Department, and the workload is 27 hours per academic year. That time will be divided between the administration of FYI and teaching in the English Department’s First Year Writing Program. After five years, lecturers are eligible for a Certificate of Continuous Employment (CCE), the equivalent of tenure.
The Associate Director will have primary responsibility for creating and scheduling FYI communities, facilitating collaboration between FYI faculty members, selecting and training student mentors, and for developing relevant programming for students and faculty. As a lecturer teaching in First Year Writing, the Associate Director will be the primary liaison between FYI and the English Department. In addition, the Associate Director will collaborate with Academic Advising and the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Minimum qualifications are a Bachelor’s degree in English or composition and rhetoric, and the ability to teach successfully. Preferred Qualifications are a Completed master’s degree and additional graduate work in English, composition, rhetoric, linguistics, second language writing/multilingualism, or literacy theory; at least two years of college teaching experience in first year writing; evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching to a diverse student population and a commitment to engaged student learning as informed by current practice and scholarship in the field; experience with course development and administration of a first year writing program, including instructor training and assessment; sufficient background in the theory and practice of writing pedagogy to provide intellectual leadership for a program in first-year writing; demonstrated ability to teach courses in the general education curriculum.
