SJU Doctoral Alum Dr. Mike Jacobs

As we make our way back to Queens this fall, we’d like to celebrate the achievements of one of our English graduate program alums.

Dr. Michael Jacobs, SJU DA 2012, has already taken up the position as new Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at SUNY Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY. Dean Jacobs oversees the School of Arts and Humanities, the School of Social Sciences and Global Studies, the Honors Institute, the Writing Across the Curriculum program, and the Global Education and International Services program.

Mike earned his Doctor of Arts degree from the SJU in 2012. His dissertation, Documentary Modernism: An American Literary Tradition, examines the influence of literary modernism on documentary journalism–as well as how comparable sociopolitical conditions in the U.S. during the Great Depression and Vietnam War Era gave rise to equally comparable surges in the production and quality of works that cross over the borders of literature and journalism.

Dr. Jacobs credits the influence of his mentor, Dr. John Lowney, and the two other members of his dissertation committee, Dr. Steve Sicari and Dr. Derek Owens.

We at St. John’s are always pleased to see our graduates move on to such successful careers!
