(Re)presentation: Problematizing Authenticity

With an increasing interest for a globalized and diverse society, the quest for an authentic self is more readily apparent and therefore further conflates the problem of representation. Globalization expands beyond social media and encroaches on the realms of the public and private spheres. However, the process of authenticity only further stabilizes potentially harmful ideologies that promote illusions of truth. In some instances, language (literature), film, and art, because of their figurative element, expose the artificiality of representation and engage the issue of authenticity. How are certain claims to truth (authenticity/referentiality) formulated, regulated, and destabilized through representation in literature, film, and art? What are the ramifications of the issue of authenticity in/with representation?
We welcome proposals for presentations on topics including but not limited to: literature, film theory, race theory, queer/quare theory, literary theory, political theory, historical criticism, performance, art, new media and digital media, composition, and rhetorical studies. Multi-media will be available for PowerPoint presentations, music or video.
Proposals for 15-minute presentations should include name, affiliation, e-mail address, title of paper, an abstract up to 250- words, and a brief biography. If submitting a panel, please include contact information for all panelists in the email and attach an abstract for each individual presentation as well as an abstract and title for the panel itself. Please submit proposals by February 13, 2015. You will receive notice via email by February 23, 2015.
