I am writing again this year on behalf of the English Department of the University of Toledo to request your help in recruiting students for our MA degree in Literature. We have a few assistantship slots left this year, and we would like to make sure we fill them. We would be very grateful if you could encourage your majors who might be graduating and interested in pursuing a MA degree, but have not made any firm plans yet, to consider applying to our program.
Our department has an energetic faculty who teach a broad range of courses in British and American literature, postcolonial and multicultural literature, fiction, drama, and poetry. We have a strong record of success when it comes to preparing students for post-graduate life, and I believe we’re a particularly good fit for students who are not quite ready for a large MA/PhD program but who would benefit from the personal mentorship and training we can offer in a smaller program.
Many of our graduates have gone on to find work in related fields like teaching or publishing, entered graduate school in related disciplines such as Library Science, or have continued on to PhD programs in literature. Indeed, recently, we’ve had students accepted to the English PhD programs of U Minnesota, University of California, Riverside, Syracuse University, University of Delaware, Penn State, CUNY Buffalo, U Iowa, University of Rhode Island, Georgia State University and Ohio SU.
All qualified full-time students are considered for Graduate Assistantships, which include a full tuition waiver and a stipend of $19,000 for two years. Graduate students take 36 hours of courses and assemble a portfolio by the time of graduation. There is no foreign language requirement, but students looking to continue to PhD programs can pursue languages.
Graduate students also have the opportunity to interact with distinguished writers and scholars hosted by the English Department. Recent speakers include George Saunders, Zadie Smith, Danzy Senna, Naomi Shihab Nye, Carl Phillips, Mark Doty, Wai Chee Dimock, Michael Berube, Vijay Prashad, and Carolyn Williams.
