“Other Voices: Redefining the Humanities”
The New Jersey College English Association solicits proposals for fully formed panels of at least four presenters, individual papers, workshops, or roundtables (6-8 presenters) on any aspect of the topic Other Voices: Redefining Humanities for its annual spring conference. The NJCEA brings together those interested in language, literature, pedagogy, and other aspects of the teaching and study of literature and writing.
Options:
Panel Proposals: Proposals for complete sessions should include the full title of the session, chair, a list of all presenters (at least four besides the Chair), as well as their affiliations, e-mail addresses, paper/presentation titles, individual abstracts (250-300 word each) and brief bios.
Individual Paper Proposals: Proposals for individual papers should include name, affiliation, email address, a 250-300-word abstracts, and brief bio.
Proposals for alternative formats are encouraged:
- Pecha Kucha sessions
- Roundtables with 6-8 presenters
- Workshops Poster presentations
- Multi-media presentations
Possible topics include but are not limited to:
- Teaching into the unknown
- Diversification and integrating a syllabus.
- What do we mean by an inclusive campus?
- What do we mean by an inclusive syllabus?
- Questions of appropriation Hiring and institutions
- Making student voices heard
- Tackling inclusion without omissions
- Service learning Study abroad
- Careerism and syllabi
- Challenging the canon: popular fiction and inclusion?
- Who gets to teach what? Teaching, diversity, and authenticity
- Responding to the news and the political situation
Additional topics of interest include:
Creative writing panels, teaching hacks, writing and research hacks, mid- semester invigorating your teaching session
All proposals should be sent as electronic attachments to Elizabeth Redwine, NJCEA Conference Organizer and First Vice-President, at Elizabeth.Redwine@shu.edu. Proposals for individual papers or full sessions are due Feb. 1, 2019
Graduate Student Awards in Literature (literary analysis) and Writing (fiction, non-fiction, and poetry)
Graduate students are invited to submit papers for the NJCEA annual Graduate Student Awards. The winners of these two awards will receive Barnes & Noble gift certificates and have their papers published in The Watchung Review, the official publication of the NJCEA. Complete submissions can be sent as electronic attachments to Rachael Warmington at rkw2111@gmail.com.
Deadline for submission of essays: February 15, 2019.
N.B. In order to be eligible to win the graduate student awards, students must present their work at the conference. Finalists for the creative writing award will present their work at a creative forum.
