Since its inception in 1981, the Woodson Institute’s Residential Fellowship Program has attracted outstanding scholars in the humanities and social sciences who work on a wide array of topics in African-American and African Studies, as well as related fields.

The Woodson provides two-year residential fellowships–at the pre-doctoral and post-doctoral levels–designed to facilitate the writing of dissertations or book manuscripts. Successful applicants will join the community of fellows at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia to exchange works-in-progress both with each other and the broader University.

The fellowship program has a high rate of success at placing its fellows in tenure-track positions and/or post-doctoral fellowships at colleges and universities across the nation, including:

  • University of Michigan
  • University of North Carolina, Chapel-Hill
