St. John’s University students and faculty are welcomed to join the Center for Place, Culture and Politics at the City University of New York for the following conference, which is free and open to the public:

Philosophy and Religion Conference in Africana Traditions

2017 Intersectionality and the Politics of Activism

Friday, OCTOBER 27, 2017

9:30am — 6:00pm

Center for Place, Culture and Politics
The Graduate Center of The City University of New York Rooms 9204/9205
365 Fifth Avenue
New York, New York 10016

Topics for Consideration:

1. Social activism. What are the main terrains of struggle? What are the strategies people are putting into place, what are the programs being developed (for instance “The Vision for Black Lives “movement)?

2. Culture and politic. Speakers will address the inter-relationships between art and politics and how cultural issues, from art, film, novels are related to liberation struggles. How art and films depict the struggle, how they contribute to it, what are the main themes?

3. Reconstructing the collective memory, from a historical and philosophical viewpoint. Speakers will comment on what of the past (history, theory, practice) now seems most important from the viewpoint of the present struggle. Explore the importance of reconnecting with the past to place the present in a context, as a way to give strength to present struggles.
