Mariah Lanzer:
Mariah is from Sebring, Ohio, and is in her second year of coursework in the PhD in English program. She chose St. John’s because of the Writing Across Communities fellowship, as well as the variety of faculty members and their research interests. In Mariah’s words,” I’ve gained a lot of insight into the research interests of other students in the program, which I think is amazing. I love hearing what other students are interested in, and knowing that I’m in a space where everyone is intellectually driven and curious makes the experience even better. I’m learning a lot from both my instructors and fellow classmates.” Some of her favorite works include Beatnik Poetry (specifically Gary Snyder’s work), which got her into poetry, but she also enjoys reading nonfiction, like Leslie Jamison’s “Empathy Exams,” and loves fiction. Her favorite author during undergrad was Philip Roth. Although she characterizes herself as all over the place, in some ways, we all are!
