Hydrofeminism with Oceans! Th 10/17 in the Writing Center (4:30 pm)

Coming to us all the way from Cape Town, South Africa, the hydrofeminist scholar and surfer Nike Romano will be in the Writing Center for a short visit tomorrow afternoon (10/17). Professor Romano’s recent book, co-edited with Tamara Shefer and Vivienne Bozalek, Hydrofeminist Thinking with Oceans: Political and Scholarsly Possibilities, just came out a few months ago.

I was fortunate to get an early look at the manuscript, and I wrote a blurb for the inside cover:

“As the seas rise, watery thinking is coming into view. This experimental collection of essays and provocations brings together many ways of thinking and being with oceanic environments. Through distinctive contributions enabled by South Africa’s historical, political, and physical conditions, these authors advance innovative practices, eco-theories, and visions for social and environmental justice.”

If the tech gods, and cross-town traffic, smile down on us, we’ll get a look at the experimental video that the three collaborators made during Covid, as part of the swimming and thinking practices that created this book.

Please join us tomorrow afternoon around 4:30!
