Last Friday afternoon, over forty St. John’s students gathered in the back corner of the Institute for Writing Studies to listen to a half-dozen recent alums of the English department talk about the careers they are building in publishing. It was a great event, with lots of eager questions and discussion.
The six panelists represented the wide range of types of position and employers in the vast ecosystem of New York publishing, from Oxford University Press, founded more than four centuries ago during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, to Elite Daily, a web-publisher built by millennials for millennials that, I must admit, I had to look up to know what it was.
The event was co-hosted by the St. John’s Career Services Center, who also announced that they will be hosting a follow-up event in the spring at which they will bring Human Resources personnel from major publishing houses to meet SJU students.
