Giovanni Singleton received a MFA in Creative Writing and Poetics from The New College of California. Her debut collection, Ascension, is informed by the music and life of Alice Coltrane. It has recently received the California Book Award Gold Medal for Poetry. Singleton was selected in 2011 for the Poetry Society of America’s biennial New American Poetry Series, which recognizes recent first book poets. She is also the recipient of a New Langton Bay Area Award Show for Literature and has been a fellow at Squaw Valley Community of Writers, Cave Canem, and the Hurston/Wright Writers Week as well as a guest writer at Cal State Los Angeles, Chabot College, and California College of Arts. In 1999, she founded nocturnes (re)view of the literary arts, a critically acclaimed journal dedicated to the work of artists and writers of the African Diaspora and other contested spaces. She has given presentations on writing, editing, graphic design, and publishing at high schools, colleges, and conferences such as the American Literature Association, Series X: Bay Area Women Publishers, the New York Festival of Literary Magazines, Spelman College, and AWP. For five years, she served as a member of the Board of Directors for Small Press Traffic, a literary arts center in San Francisco.
Her work has appeared on the building of Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and in Zen Monster, VOLT, Callaloo, Poet Lore, Angles of Ascent: A Norton Anthology, What I Say: Innovative Poetry by Black Writers in America, Kindergarde: Avant-Garde Poems, Plays, & Stories for Children, I’ll Drown My Book: A Collection of Conceptual Writing, The Breast: An Anthology, Beyond the Frontier: African American Poets for the Millennium, and Earth’s Body: An International Anthology of Contemporary Ecopoetry. Work from her AMERICAN LETTERS series was selected for San Francisco’s 1st Visual Poetry & Performance Festival. Over the past 15 years, singleton has taught at Saint Mary’s College, Naropa University, and in museums and schools throughout the San Francisco Bay area. She collects bookmarks and enjoys figs and Greek style yogurt.
