Dr. Melissa Mowry has been at St. John’s since 2001. An eighteenth-century specialist, she enjoys teaching classes in the novel. Dr. Mowry also teaches and performs research in contemporary theory and the culture of the humanities. Dr. Mowry is currently working on a book called Ties that Bind: The Hermeneutics of Collectivity and the English Literary Imagination, 1642-1748. Dr. Mowry conducted research for the seventeenth century components of the project at the world-renowned Folger Shakespeare Library. Her favorite book is Toni Morrison’s Beloved.
When Dr. Mowry isn’t writing and working on research, she trains for triathlon sprints. Fortunately, Dr. Mowry finds running after her kids a good way to train. Her favorite food is homemade pizza.
When asked what advice would she offer her students, Dr. Mowry says, “Read, revise, read, revise, read, revise. And when you’re done with that, read some more and revise again!”
